The oldest existing golf course in the Coachella Valley located in Palm Springs is a combination of easy, flat holes and tricky shots that can turn a round from par to over par quickly. Oilman Tom O'Donnell owned the land and laid out the course -- and the course today is almost unchanged from the 1930s. Only the greens have been raised slightly. The course is traditional except for the par-3 fifth hole, which requires a blind shot over a rock cropping at the base of the mountains to a large, flat green. A television monitor lets players see the position of the flag and if the green is clear. The par-5 sixth is a perfect example of the course. While short and reachable in two shots for many players, the hole tortures golfers with a tree in the middle of the fairway that knocks down even good shots. Even some of the short par-4s can be difficult. The first two holes
require precise tee shots to avoid trees and out of bounds to the right,
and, on the first hole, trees to the left.
